Getting started
Do I need an account to use the app?
No. You can browse gyms and routes without signing in. To log routes, follow other climbers, or create lists you need a free account.
How do I create an account?
On the welcome screen, choose how you want to continue: with Apple, with Google, or with your email address. If you choose email, we send a 6-digit code to sign you in — no password needed. New accounts are set up automatically on first sign-in.
What happens during onboarding?
After signing in you will be asked to choose a username — this is the only required step. You can also add a display name and a profile photo if you like, or skip those and add them later. Once you reach the home screen you will be offered the option to select favorite gyms; this personalises your home feed and can be adjusted at any time from within the app.
Logging routes
How do I log a route?
Navigate to a gym, open the Routes tab, and tap the route you climbed. On the route detail screen, tap Log, choose your send type, fill in any details, and save.
What are the different send types?
In climbing, completing a route is called a send — all four types below count as one. The type you pick describes how you completed it.
- Onsight — sent on your very first attempt with no prior knowledge of the route: no beta, no watching others on it beforehand.
- Flash — sent on your very first attempt. You may have had beta or watched someone else on it beforehand.
- Redpoint — completed cleanly, no falls, after previously falling on or rehearsing the route.
- Send— the default type. Use this when you completed the route and none of the above apply, or when you're not sure which label fits.
What is the attempts field?
When logging a send or redpoint you can record how many attempts it took. For onsight and flash the count is always 1 and cannot be changed.
What else can I record when logging?
The log form includes:
- Send type — onsight, flash, redpoint, or send.
- Attempts — how many attempts it took (locked to 1 for onsight and flash).
- Date — optional. Leave blank if you don't want to record when.
- Note — a public comment on your send, visible to anyone who views it. For a private personal note about a route, there is a separate note feature on the route itself.
- Grade vote — your opinion on how the grade compares to the official one.
- Tags — vote on the characteristics of the route. See the Tags section below.
- Private — toggle to hide the entire log from other users. By default your send is visible on your public profile.
Can I edit or delete a logged route?
Yes. Open the route detail screen, tap Edit on your log, and make your changes. The option to delete the log is also found inside the edit screen.
Community grading
What is community grading?
Gyms set an official grade for each route. When you log a send you can also cast a grade vote if you think it feels harder or easier than the official grade. The route detail screen shows both grades side by side — the gym's official grade and the consensus from everyone who has voted.
Do I have to vote on the grade?
No. The grade vote is optional — you can log a send without casting one.
Tags
What are tags?
Tags are predefined descriptions of what a route is like — things like the style of movement or the type of holds. They are grouped into categories and shown on the route detail screen with a count of how many climbers have voted for each one.
How do I add a tag?
When logging or editing a send, open the tags section and tap the tags that describe the route. You can select as many as apply. Your votes are combined with other users' votes to build a community description of the route.
Can I remove a tag vote?
Yes. Open the tags section on your send and tap a tag you have already voted for to remove your vote.
Gyms
How do I find a gym?
Open the Map tab to see gyms near you on an interactive map, or switch to list view to search by name. Tap any gym to open its detail page.
What can I see on a gym's page?
A gym page has several tabs:
- Overview— the gym's address is always shown. Moderated gyms may also provide a description, opening hours, and facilities, but this is up to each gym.
- Routes — active routes by default. You can also use the filters to view historical routes that have been taken down.
- Sections / Walls — the individual walls or sections within the gym. This tab only appears if the gym has added any.
- Activity — recent sends by members, new routes being added, and gym announcements.
- Statistics — grade distribution and activity data across the gym.
What does the gym Statistics tab show?
The Statistics tab shows grade spread and activity data across all routes at that gym.
How do I browse routes at a gym?
Open the Routes tab. You can filter by grade, hold color, and discipline (boulder or rope), and sort by newest, most popular, or difficulty.
How do I save a favorite gym?
On the gym's overview page tap the star icon. Favoriting a gym adds it to your home screen for quick access and subscribes you to its feed — you will see new routes and announcements from that gym on your home screen.
Can I send a message to a gym?
If the gym is moderated you can contact the management team directly from the app. Tap the three-dot menu on the gym's page and choose the contact option. Unmoderated gyms have no management team, so this option is not available for them.
How do I report a gym?
Tap the three-dot menu on the gym's page and choose Report. Fill in the reason and submit. You can track the status of your report in Profile > Settings > My Reports.
Can I edit a gym's details?
Only gym moderators and head moderators can edit a gym. If you are a moderator, tap the three-dot menu on the gym's page and open Gym settings. Regular users cannot edit a gym's details.
Adding a gym
My gym is not in the app — how do I add it?
Any user can add a gym. Tap the + button on the Map or gym list screen, fill in the details, and submit. The gym will be created as an unmoderated gym, meaning any user can add and edit routes there by default.
What do I fill in when adding a gym?
- Name — required.
- Address — required. Start typing and select from the suggestions.
- Disciplines — required. Select at least one of bouldering or rope.
After submitting you are taken straight to the grade system setup, where you configure how routes at your gym are graded.
How do I set up a grade system?
Each discipline (bouldering and rope) gets its own grade system. You can either pick one of the built-in official systems or create a custom one from scratch.
A custom grade system is a list of grades you define yourself. Each grade has a label (required), an optional color, and an optional grade range. The range lets the gym indicate what a custom grade corresponds to in a recognised standard system, so climbers can interpret the difficulty in terms they already know.
Grades can be reordered at any time, and the grade system can be edited later in Gym settings.
What is an unmoderated gym?
An unmoderated gym has no designated management team. Anyone in the app can add, edit, or remove routes. This is the default state for newly added gyms and works well for community-run or smaller walls.
Can I request official moderation for my gym?
Moderation is only available to official representatives of a gym. To request it, email support@indoorclimbingapp.com and include the gym name and the username of the account you want assigned as head moderator. Send the email from a contact address that can be publicly linked to the gym — an official website, Facebook page, or similar — so we can confirm the affiliation. If approved, the gym is toggled to moderated and your account is set up as head moderator.
Adding routes
Who can add routes?
By default, any logged-in user can add routes to any gym. Moderated gyms can restrict this — but until they actively do so in their route permission settings, user additions remain open.
How do I add a route?
From anywhere on the gym's page, tap the three-dot menu in the header and select the add route option.
What information is required for a route?
- At least one photo.
- Route colors — the color of the holds or tape. You can select multiple colors for routes that mix.
- Discipline — only shown if the gym offers both bouldering and rope. Otherwise it is set automatically.
Everything else is optional:
- Grade — selected from the gym's grade system.
- Section / Wall — which area of the gym the route is on.
- Name — up to 30 characters.
- Additional information — up to 300 characters.
- Set date.
- Height — in meters or feet depending on your unit preference.
- Routesetters — credit the people who set the route.
- Available to climb — defaults to active. Toggle off if the route has been taken down; you can also set a takedown date.
Can I edit a route?
Yes, if you have edit rights at the gym (the gym allows user edits, or you are a moderator or contributor). Open the route detail screen and tap the edit option in the menu.
How do I mark a route as taken down?
Routes should not be deleted when they are taken down. Instead, open the route and toggle Available to climboff. This keeps the route's history intact while hiding it from the active route list.
Gym moderators can permanently delete a route, but this should only be used for genuinely faulty entries — duplicates, test entries, or routes added by mistake.
To take down multiple routes at once, enter select mode from the gym's route display and use the take down action.
Lists
What are lists?
Lists are personal collections of routes. Use them to track projects you want to try, routes you enjoyed, or any custom grouping that makes sense to you.
How do I create a list?
Go to your profile and tap the Lists tab, then tap the create button. Give your list a name and an optional description. From any route detail screen you can then add that route to one of your lists.
Can other people see my lists?
Lists are public by default so other users can view them on your profile. You can make a list private from its settings — private lists are only visible to you.
What is the Save button on a route?
On any route detail screen there is a Save button that instantly adds the route to your quick-save list. By default this list is called Savedand is private. Tap Save again to remove the route from it.
Can I change which list the Save button uses?
Yes. Go to your profile, open the Lists tab, and long-press any of your lists. Choose Set as quick-save list to make that list the one the Save button adds to. You can also do this from the lists sheet on any route detail screen.
Can I add multiple routes to a list at once?
Yes. From a gym's route display, enter select mode and pick the routes you want, then use the add to list action.
Social and activity feed
How does the home feed work?
Your home feed shows recent activity from climbers you follow and gyms you have saved as favorites. The Discover tab shows public activity from the wider community and is available without an account.
How do I follow another user?
Open their profile — tap their name anywhere in the app or scan their QR code — and tap Follow. Their activity will appear in your home feed.
Your profile
What is shown on my profile?
Your profile shows your avatar, display name, username, bio (if you have set one), a Supporter badge (if applicable), and your follower and following counts.
What tabs does my profile have?
- Activity — your recent logged activity.
- Sends — all your completed routes.
- Lists — your public lists.
- Statistics — your climbing stats broken down by grade, time period, and discipline.
- Sets — appears only if you have sets.
How do I edit my profile?
Tap Edit profilebelow your profile header, or go to Profile > Settings > Account.
How do I share my profile?
On your profile, tap the share icon in the top-right corner of the screen — it sits next to the three-dot menu button. This opens a QR code others can scan to go directly to your profile.
How do I report another user?
Open their profile and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then choose Report.
Supporter subscription
What do I get as a Supporter?
- A Supporter badge displayed on your profile.
- Access to additional accent color themes in Appearance settings.
What subscription options are available?
Monthly and annual subscriptions both grant Supporter status for their duration. There is also a one-time purchase option if you want to contribute without a recurring subscription — this does not grant any features and is simply a way to support the app. All purchases are handled through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) — we do not manage billing directly.
How do I cancel my subscription?
- iOS:Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions.
- Android:Google Play > Profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
I lost my Supporter status after reinstalling — how do I restore it?
Go to Profile > Settings > Subscription and tap Restore purchases. This re-validates your purchase and restores your Supporter status.
Notifications
What types of notifications does the app send?
- New followers.
- New routes at your favorite gyms.
- Announcements from gyms you follow.
- Sends logged by climbers you follow.
- Updates on reports you have submitted.
- Moderation alerts (gym moderators only).
How do I turn notifications on or off?
Profile > Settings > Notifications. Toggle each category individually. Your device must also have notifications enabled for IndoorClimbingApp in its system settings.
Account and settings
How do I change my display name?
Profile > Settings > Profile. This is also where you update your avatar, cover photo, and bio.
How do I change my username?
Profile > Settings > Account. Usernames can be changed subject to availability.
How do I change the email address on my account?
Profile > Settings > Account > Change email. Confirmations are sent to both your old and new address; the change takes effect once both are confirmed.
Can I link or unlink Apple or Google sign-in?
Yes. Profile > Settings > Account shows which sign-in methods are linked. You can unlink a provider as long as at least one other method remains active.
How do I change the app language?
Profile > Settings > Language. The app is available in English and Swedish.
How do I change the appearance or theme?
Profile > Settings > Appearance. Choose light, dark, or system (follows your device). Additional accent color themes are available to Supporters.
What accessibility options are available?
- Text scaling — five size levels, independent of the system font size.
- High contrast mode — increases contrast across the interface.
- Reduce motion— follows your device's reduce motion setting and shortens or skips animations.
These are in Profile > Settings > Appearance.
Where can I see reports I have submitted?
Profile > Settings > My Reports shows all reports you have filed — on routes, users, or gyms — along with their current status and any responses from moderators.
How do I delete my account?
Profile > Settings > Account > Delete account. You will be signed out immediately. If you change your mind, sign back in within 30 days — you will be shown the option to cancel the deletion before your data is permanently removed.
For gym managers
How do I get official moderation for my gym?
Moderation is only available to official representatives of a gym. Email support@indoorclimbingapp.com from a contact address that can be publicly linked to the gym — an official website, Facebook page, or similar — and include the gym name and the username of the account you want assigned as head moderator. If approved, the gym is toggled to moderated and that account is set up as head moderator.
What roles exist for gym staff?
- Head moderator — full access to all gym settings, including assigning and removing moderators and contributors.
- Moderator — same access as head moderator except managing the team. Can manage routes, settings, and reports.
- Contributor — can add and edit routes. Does not have access to settings or team management.
What can my team manage in the app?
- Add, edit, and remove routes.
- Configure the gym's grading system (colors, grade ranges).
- Manage walls and locations within the gym.
- Set opening hours and facilities information.
- Post announcements to gym followers.
- Review and resolve user reports.
- Manage team members and their roles.
Can I control whether regular users can add routes?
Yes. In Gym Settings > Route permissions you can toggle whether users can add routes and whether they can edit existing ones. If you want selected trusted users to be able to contribute without opening it up to everyone, you can add them as contributors instead.
How does the report queue work?
When a user submits a report about a route at your gym it appears in Gym Settings > Reports with an unread badge. Moderators can view the report thread, respond to the reporter, and mark it as resolved.
Community guidelines
Route submissions
When adding a route, follow these guidelines:
- Photos — capture the full route clearly in one photo. If it is too long to fit, use several to cover it from start to finish. Keep the focus on the route and avoid including people or unrelated surroundings.
- Colors— select the color of the route's holds or tape. Use a single color for single-colored routes, or multiple if it mixes colors.
- Name — this is for routesetters to name their own routes. If you did not set the route, leave this blank.
- Additional information — add anything useful the other fields do not cover, such as start position, warnings about loose holds, or anything else climbers should know before getting on it.
General conduct
We expect users to behave reasonably. This includes not uploading offensive or inappropriate images, not using offensive display names, and not filing reports without genuine reason. If something or someone is bothering you, use the report function — do not abuse it.
What happens if I break the rules?
Depending on the severity, accounts may receive one of two types of restriction:
- Contribution ban — you can still log in and browse, but cannot add or edit gyms, routes, or upload images.
- Full suspension — you cannot log in to the app.
Bans may be temporary or permanent. If you believe a ban was applied in error, contact us at support@indoorclimbingapp.com.
